Surface winds are generated by the daily ritual of the
heating and cooling of the earth's surface. Wind can
cause temperatures to feel cooler than the
surrounding air temperature creating what is termed
a "wind chill".
Winds also work hand-in-hand to create pressure
and flow into areas similar to water from a garden
hose. Using the same amount of water moving
through the hose you have a flow of a certain
pressure. If you make that hose smaller or use your
finger at the end to make the exit tighter, the end
result is higher pressure. Wind works the same way.
Depending on which direction the winds are blowing determines whether there is a high pressure or low pressure system or even a frontal boundary over a certain area.
Winds can cause objects and debris to sail into the air and during extreme conditions, such as thunderstorms, sand storms, derechoes or tornadoes; it can cause damage or even death.
